Nursing home 'utterly shocked' as murder probe launched over woman's death

Written by Rick Goodman

A seaside nursing home has said it is "utterly shocked" after the suspected murder of an elderly woman.

The 79-year-old woman suffered fatal injuries at Langley Lodge Nursing Home in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex and police were called about 10pm on Monday.

A Leigh-on-Sea man, 52, who is related to the woman, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, Essex Police said.

The nursing home confirmed an incident took place, saying it was working with police and supporting other residents.

"We are utterly shocked by what happened," Langley Lodge said in a statement on Tuesday.

"We are cooperating with the police on this matter.

"We are providing support to other residents and their families.

"We will not comment further at this time."

Langley Lodge is a private nursing and residential care home that is registered for a maximum of 29 residents.

The home's website says it has "a warm, pleasant and relaxed, homely atmosphere" and is "located within idyllic, peaceful grounds" facing the Thames Estuary.

Essex Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the death of the woman.

They would not provide further details on the nature of the relationship between the woman and the suspect.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course.
