The Care Inspectorate have announced the appointment of Peter Macleod as their new Chief Executive.

Mr Macleod is currently Director of Children’s Services and Chief Social Worker, at Renfrewshire Council, a post he has held since January 2015.

Welcoming the appointment, Paul Edie, Chair, Care Inspectorate said: “I am delighted to confirm that Peter Macleod has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Care Inspectorate, following a detailed and rigorous recruitment process.

“Applications were received from a very high calibre of candidates and I am pleased that the recruitment process has concluded successfully. Ministers have approved this appointment and Peter will take up his new responsibilities in the New Year. I wish Peter all the best in his new role and look forward to working closely with him."

Peter Macleod added: "I am honoured to have been appointed as Chief Executive of the Care Inspectorate. I am aware that the organisation and staff play an important and vital role in protecting people who are vulnerable and who experience care. At a time of ongoing change in the social care sector, we need to make sure we continue to provide public protection. It is also important that we continue to help drive improvement where care services are not providing safe, compassionate and high-quality care.

"I look forward to consolidating and building on the work of the organisation. My priority is to work in collaboration with staff, scrutiny partners, service providers, people who experience care services, and their families, and to improve outcomes for people across Scotland."

Peter has enjoyed a varied career within social work. Training as a social worker in the 1980’s and qualifying in 1987, he worked in a range of frontline social work services, starting his career in Glasgow where he developed a particular interest in working with children and young people.

Peter then joined Renfrewshire Council in 1996 as an Area Manager working his way up to the post of Head of Child Care and Criminal Justice before taking on the joint role of Head of Childcare for social work and for the Community Health Partnership.

He was then appointed Director of Social Work for Renfrewshire Council in September 2007 before being appointed as the council's first Director of Children’s Services which combined education, children’s social work and criminal justice services.

In other roles, Peter was President of the Association of Directors of Social Work in 2012/13 and also appointed chair of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services and where he co-chaired national groups in relation to health and care integration on outcomes and commissioning.

Other board positions have included those of Technology Enabled Care, Macmillan Cancer Support's TCAT programme and the National Realigning Children's Services board.
